Melb College of Natural Medicine Scholarships:
Win a scholarship in natural medicine courses applications at the School to Work Office. Applications close 30th September. Please see Marla Carlier.

Rural and Remote Pharmacy Scholarships:  Application forms available in Careers Office
Offered by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care, through the Rural Health Support, Education and Training (RHSET) program. The scholarships are valued at $6,000 per annum per student (i.e. $24,000 over a four-year period). Students must:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • enrol in full-time study and remain in full-time study
  • have a home address in a rural or remote area
  • demonstrate a desire to return to a rural or remote community upon graduation
  • provide a 1,000-word essay demonstrating a developing broad awareness of rural health issues
  • agree to actively promote rural pharmacy as a career option to at least one rural high school each year
  • agree to provide a brief report at the completion of each year of study, and a more detailed report at graduation.

La Trobe University offers a number of scholarships to undergraduate students. Some scholarships apply to any program of study; some are applicable to specific courses or campuses. If you wish to apply for a La Trobe Scholarship, you must list La Trobe University among your VTAC or UAC preferences. These scholarships are available to commencing students who are undertaking university studies for the first time.

La Trobe University Undergraduate Scholarships for Commencing First-year Students
Scholarships valued at $1,500 are available for commencing first-year students who enrol in full-time undergraduate courses at any one of the campuses of La Trobe University (Bundoora, Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura, Shepparton, Mt Buller). Applicants must be undertaking their first course of study at a university. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated need for financial assistance, and are available to Australian citizens or residents not liable for full University fees. The scholarships are available in the first year of enrolment only.

Vice-Chancellor's Regional Scholarships
Up to five scholarships are available for students commencing first-year studies at each of the campuses of La Trobe University at Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Mildura. Applicants must be residents of the respective region surrounding the regional campuses of the University and must be commencing full-time study for their first qualification at a university. Each applicant must provide evidence of the capacity to undertake university studies and demonstrate the need for financial assistance to permit the commencement of study.

Glenn College Scholarships for new residents

Scholarships are awarded for academic excellence to new residents enrolling in each of the following Faculties: Health Sciences, Science, Technology & Engineering, Law & Management, and Humanities & Social Science.  These awards are based on ENTER scores.  In addition, there are two scholarships awarded (one male and one female) in each of the following categories:  Demonstrated Leadership and Potential Contribution to College; Demonstrated Sport Achievement, State or National Level; Demonstrated Cultural, Society or Music Achievement at Representative Level.

Menzies College Leadership Awards

Up to five leadership awards per semester are given to students joining College who are able to contribute with distinction to the sporting, cultural or community life. Students wishing to be considered for these awards should note this in their Application for College Accommodation, in Section E, and supply as much documentation as possible. Chisholm College Accommodation Awards

Academic Achievement and Financial Assistance Grants. In keeping with the Chisholm College commitment to academic excellence and its policies of equality, 20 Accommodation Awards are distributed annually at the beginning of the academic year. Awards offer a 50% rental reduction, and are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, financial need and/or special contributions to the Chisholm community. They are made to local and overseas students undertaking full-time study. Students must be resident, or have an offer of residency, for Chisholm College, and must be enrolled La Trobe students.

Chisholm College Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Accommodation Award

To give substance to its policy of supporting the increase of access of students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent to La Trobe University, Chisholm College .

Chisholm College Academic Awards

These annual awards are made to the most outstanding Chisholm undergraduate in each of La Trobe University's four faculties at Bundoora. The recipients are selected by the Head of College, on the basis of the official results for the academic year in question. The awards take the form of a certificate of merit and a book voucher of $150 in value.
FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

The Gwen Saunders Memorial Scholarship
This award has been established as a trust fund by Mr Walter Schnock to honour the memory of Gwen Saunders. The award is valued at $500 and shall be awarded to a person who enrols as a student in the Bachelor of Podiatry at La Trobe University. Information: (03) 9479 5787.

FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Scholarships ($1,000 each)

Ten academic merit scholarships will be awarded to students completing their VCE in 2004. Any student enrolled in the first year of any one of the Faculty’s bachelor degrees is eligible for a scholarship. Menzies College/Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Joint Scholarship

One scholarship is available to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolling for an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Rural Finance Corporation Scholarships ($6,000)
Rural Finance offers five new scholarships each year across different Rural Finance regions. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students undertaking a degree course, which is agriculturally related, at a tertiary institution in Victoria. Department of Natural Resources and Environment Cadetship Program
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment offers sponsored cadetships to students finishing Year 12, or first year university, who are keen to study agricultural science at a recognised Victorian university. Cadets are assured of four years of full-time work on completion of their degree, in addition to receiving an allowance, a book subsidy for each year of study, and access to hands-on job experience during their university course. Computer Science and Computer Engineering Scholarships ($1,000)
Five scholarships of $1,000 each are available to students commencing courses in the fields of computer science or computer engineering at the Bundoora campus. Microsoft Australia Computer Games Technology Scholarship

Awarded to a high achieving VCE student commencing a degree within the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Microsoft Australia Limited has donated this scholarship which is designed to encourage students to pursue a career in Games Technology. Suitable applicants are required to complete an application form through the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering and should be able to demonstrate an interest in Games Technology. Sony Foundation Australia Computer Games Technology Scholarship

Awarded to a high achieving VCE student commencing a degree within the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Electronic Engineering Scholarship ($1,000)

Hooper First-Year Scholarship
Awarded to a student commencing an electronic engineering course, who has demonstrated high academic achievement (normally ENTER based). The student must also demonstrate the ability to work well independently, work co-operatively, communicate ideas effectively, and motivate both self and others. Information: (03) 9479 2036.

Wanda Henry Scholarship ($2,000 per annum)
Awarded to a student who is enrolling in the Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics)/Master of Engineering Science (Biomedical) and who completed the final year of the VCE (or equivalent) in the preceding year and who demonstrates specified qualities. First-Year Scholarships in Mathematics and Statistical Science ($1,000 each)

R.E. McGarvie Memorial Scholarship

In recognition of the contributions of the Honourable Richard Elgin McGarvie in his role as Chancellor of La Trobe University from 1981 to 1992, as a promoter and contributor to legal education and as Governor of Victoria from 1992 to 1997, La Trobe University has established the R.E. McGarvie Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a student from regional Victoria enrolling for a Bachelor of Laws double degree to be offered at Bendigo from 2005. Applicants must be commencing study at a university for the first time and be able to demonstrate the need for financial assistance to permit them to undertake study at the University. The scholarship will have an annual value of $3,000 and will be available for the minimum duration of the course of study.  Information: (03) 9479 1789.

Bendigo United Friendly Societies Dispensaries Pharmacy Scholarship ($5,000 per year)
Preference will be given to students from the City of Greater Bendigo region who have successfully completed the Victorian Certificate of Education, or equivalent, within the last 12 months. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 per annum, tenable for the normal length of the course (four years) and, subject to satisfactory academic performance, is payable following confirmation of enrolment in each year of the course.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be attempting their first tertiary education qualification and not in receipt of any other scholarship. Successful applicants will be expected to undertake a portion of the practicum requirements at the Bendigo United Friendly Societies Dispensaries Limited, and upon graduation, work for the Society for a period not less than the number of years for which the scholarship was paid. Coliban Water Civil Engineering Scholarships ($3,000)

Two scholarships shall be made to first-year full-time Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) students from regional Victoria who have successfully completed the Victorian Certificate of Education, or equivalent, within the last 12 months.

Lisa Malone Scholarship
This scholarship pays tribute to the work of Lisa Malone, former resident of Wodonga and student in social work at La Trobe University. The University, with the support of the Albury-Wodonga community, the Border Mail and the Hume Building Society established the scholarship to commemorate Lisa's humanitarian work. The scholarship provides $3,000 for a year of study in any course that contributes to community development and welfare. What selection criteria are used?

The selection of successful scholars is based on the following criteria:

·         Academic performance at school or University (or equivalent success in another activity for mature aged students). As a general guide, approximately 80% of successful first year applicants have had a UAI greater than 92.

·         Leadership and motivation as demonstrated by your contribution to the community, university life, or school (in the case of school leavers).

·         Evidence of motivation as shown by an ability to set and achieve personal and career goals.

Frequently Asked Questions about Scholarships

1. How many times a year are scholarships offered?

Scholarships are only offered once per year. First year student scholarship applications close in late February while scholarship applications for continuing students close in late October for the coming year.

2. How many scholarships were awarded last year?

In 2003 the following number of scholarships were awarded:
· Albury-Wodonga: 12
· Bathurst: 98
· Wagga Wagga: 35
· Dubbo: 16

 

3. What different types of scholarships are there?

There are a variety of different types of scholarship available. Most are based on academic merit although some are specifically for hardship, disadvantage, and indigenous and distance education students. There is a complete listing of all scholarships available on this website.

You are not required to apply for a particular scholarship. You will automatically be considered for any scholarship for which you may be eligible, based on the information that you provide in your application.

4. How do I qualify for a scholarship based on hardship or disadvantage or apply if I'm an indigenous or external student?

Students should provide documentation to prove that they fit into one of the above categories. Often Centrelink documentation is used, or students write a letter explaining their individual circumstances.

9. Where else can I look for scholarships that are available?

A selection of scholarships offered independently of the Foundation is listed on this site and also printed in our brochure. Don't forget to do online searches, visit your library and student services for more help on how to find scholarships. It often takes a lot of work, but the reward is well worth the time involved.

10. What effect will a scholarship have on my financial assistance from Centrelink?

If you were successful enough in gaining a scholarship and are worried about this issue it is advisable to discuss this issue with your local Centrelink office, your parents or your accountant.

11. Do you have any tips when applying for a scholarship.

a. Pay close attention to scholarship application closing deadlines. Applications submitted past the deadline are usually not considered.
b. Prepare your Resume - this is a good way to outline your thoughts, your activities and achievements.
c. Always proofread answers to your questions. Errors or poor writing skills will have a negative effect.
d. Keep a copy of everything you submit!

13. When are the Scholarship Presentation Ceremonies

The scholarships are presented at a ceremony on each campus in April or May. The ceremonies are attended by participating organisations, senior staff of the University, scholars their families and guests. These are special functions which allow students to meet their donor and build ongoing relationships

Commonwealth Learning Scholarships 2005

Commonwealth Learning Scholarships provide assistance to rural and isolated, low income and Indigenous full-time students with financial support associated with their study in an undergraduate degree program. The Scholarships are available to Australian citizens or holders of Australian permanent humanitarian visas.

There are two types of Commonwealth Learning Scholarships (CLS):

1. Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarship (CECS) – value $2,000 per year
2. Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarship (CAS) – value $4,000 per year

Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS)

These scholarships will be exempt for the purposes of the Social Security Act and thus income from these scholarships will not be taken into account when applying the Personal Income Test for Youth Allowance, Austudy, Abstudy, or the primary payment of students receiving a Pensioner Education Supplement. Both are merit-based, non-repayable and target students from low socio-economic backgrounds

The Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) and the Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) have been distributed to eligible higher education providers The Commonwealth has provided guidelines to the higher education providers for the allocation of these scholarships but the providers determine their own selection and offer processes.

Note to potential applicants:

The Commonwealth Learning Scholarships programme is administered on behalf of the Australian Government by individual higher education providers. The providers are responsible for conducting their own application and selection procedures, in line with guidelines issued by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Potential applicants need to direct their enquiries on application procedures, deadlines, etc to the higher education providers.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship, a student must:

 

 

Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) are aimed at assisting students who have to relocate from a rural or isolated area in order to undertake study at La Trobe University. In addition to the above eligibility criteria, students applying for a CAS must meet the following criteria:

(1) Either:

(a) the student has lived in the rural or regional area for at least the previous three years immediately preceding the commencement of their course of study; OR
(b) the student is/was a school leaver who has/had recently completed the final two years of schooling in a rural or regional high school/college immediately prior to commencement of study; AND

(2) it was necessary for the student to move away from the rural and regional area in order to undertake their course of study, as demonstrated by at least one of the following:

(a) that traveling from the student’s previous address would be an unreasonable demand and present a barrier to meeting the requirements of their course; OR
(b) that the student’s personal circumstances made it necessary for them to move to undertake their chosen course of study; AND

(3) students are enrolled principally on an internal basis. (An internal student is a student who, for the majority of the units of study in which they are enrolled, is required to attend a campus of the University on a regular basis.); AND

(4) the student is not living with either of their natural or adoptive parents unless the Department of Education Science and Training (DEST) has agreed to waive the requirement due to exceptional circumstances.
