ITALIAN OPERA

BARBER OF SEVILLE

27TH APRIL

74 Galen students were blown away by the beauty and magnificance of this Opera at the Victorian Arts Centre. Dressed to the nines, the girls were all frocked up and the boys suited up and dashing ready for a night of music and wonder. Dinner in Lygon Street followed, before heading home in the wee small hours of the morning.

A 'LOTE' to talk about at Galen

The LOTE Department at Galen is responsible for teaching the language and culture of Indonesia and Italy to approximately 370 students from years 7 to 12.

Italian was taught from 1977 at Champagnat College (boys) and soon after at St. Joseph's College (girls). Indonesian was added to the LOTE curriculum in the mid-Nineties.

Wangaratta and district has a large Italian community as a result of migration during the Fifties and Sixties. There are strong historical links between Australia and Italy in the areas of religion, culture, trade and tourism. So the introduction of the Italian language in the Catholic secondary schools was a natural consequence. The introduction of Indonesian was a recognition of the fact that Australia is also part of the Asian region and it is therefore equally as important that students develop the ability to speak an Asian language and understand its culture.

Year 7 students are introduced to both languages, one term of Indonesian and one term of Italian. In year 8, students choose to study one of the languages for the whole year. In year 9 learning a LOTE becomes optional. Students have the opportunity to continue language studies right through to year 12 where they are rewarded by receiving a bonus TER score for studying their language of choice.

The Galen LOTE page will include lots of news about the people and activities that make language learning at Galen enjoyable and rewarding. So, give LOTE at Galen a look and have a 'LOTE' to talk about.

Two months in Italy

I counted down the days before departing for Ancona, a city on the central east coast of Italy. Everything was better than expected: the people, food, lifestyle and atmosphere. I loved going for walks to the main ‘piazza’ and along the streets to window shop and have a slice of pizza or a scoop of gelato. For the new year I went to Barcelona with a group of Americans, Japanese, Italians and Aussies. I enjoyed meeting many different people and exploring another country. One of my favourite memories is of an Italian boy who was excited to tell me he had relatives in Australia. When I asked “where?”, he replied “New Zealand!” It was the time of my life; I learned and experienced new things each day. I have now caught the travel bug and I am counting down the days until I will return.

Two months in the lifetime

Cruising down the cobblestone street on a zippy little Vespa, Italian Villas on my right, the brilliant snow-capped mountains on my left I think about how lucky I am to be here, Italy, the land of pizza and pasta! Not only did my time in Italy greatly benefit my language skills, but I was welcomed into an Italian family and experienced a completely different way of life. With my host family I have experienced the Italian school life, travelled the wonderful sights of Italy and most of all made lifelong friends. The time of my life I will never forget!

Why not offer a similar opportunity to an Italian student wanting to experience Australian lifestyle? For details on hosting an Italian student contact Franco Cudini at Galen.
