Mathematics

Mathematics subjects available at Galen College from Years Seven to Ten, aim to provide the students with the necessary skills and knowledge so that they can deal confidently and competently with daily life and meet the challenges presented in employment and further study.

Galen not only offers 'Mathematics' at each level with content matching the specifications laid out in the CSF documents, but also offers the additional subjects to further meet the needs of the individual:

Challenging Mathematics (Year 10) provides an extension to the standard Year Ten program. It enables students to consolidate and refine their problem solving skills so that they are better prepared to tackle VCE Mathematics

General Mathematics (Year 10)
provides an opportunity for students who otherwise struggle with mainstream Mathematics to feel a sense of achievement whilst gaining valuable skills

Computer Mathematics (Year 9) introduces students to the world of Mathematics on Computers via the use of various software programs

Through the study of Mathematics, students work towards the following goals:

To acquire mathematical skills and knowledge so they can confidently and competently deal with every day life, employment, interests and further study
To be able to interpret and communicate quantitative and logical ideas accurately
To recognize the fundamental importance of mathematics to the functioning of society
To understand and appreciate the nature of mathematical thinking, the processes by which mathematics changes and its cultural role
To understand the dynamic role of mathematics in social and technological change
To use technology appropriately and effectively to support the learning of mathematics and in carrying out mathematical activities in context

Students at each year level learn mathematics through the mastery of several components:

Knowing mathematical facts such as the multiplication tables, the distributive law or the meaning of the word polygon
Being able to carry out mathematical procedures such as adding numbers or drawing a graph
Being able to use mathematics in solving problems and describing and understanding the world
Teaching and Learning strategies include problem solving and assignment work, practical activities, demonstrations, investigations, modelling themes, facts and skills, tests and group work via discussions

The study of Mathematics at Galen College aims to be a positive experience in which students develop confidence and a sense of achievement from what they learn.
