Shakespeare's MACBETH

It can be (and has been) argued that perhaps no other body of work save the Bible has been more studied and written about, or has had more influence on the literary and social culture of Western civilization than that of William Shakespeare. It is difficult to encapsulate the impact of Shakespeare's writing.

Warning:

Macbeth is supposed to upset people. It shows life at its most brutal and cynical, in order to ask life's toughest question. This page deals with all this without apology. I have a high regard for truth and I talk plain. If you want something nice, please leave now.

This Figure, that thou here seest put,
It was for gentle Shakespeare cut,
Wherein the Graver had a strife
with Nature, to out-doo the life :
O, could he but have drawne his wit
As well in brasse, as he hath hit
His face ; the Print would then surpasse
All, that was ever writ in brasse.
But, since he cannot, Reader, looke
Not on his Picture, but his Booke.

2. List 10 interesting facts you have discovered about the play Macbeth.

"Macbeth is never normal. The powers within him, his nature, temperment and character are over-vigorous in whatever direction they work. It is the man, it is the substance of his mind and spirit, and evil has chosen him because it sees a rich victim in these endowments once they are perverted."

Lady Macbeth / Lady Macbeth / Lady Macbeth

- Wife of Macbeth who abets his murder. On the surface, she appears ruthless and hardened, but her participation in the murder of Duncan gnaws at her conscience.
Was it indeed the harping of Lady Macbeth challenging Macbeth's manhood (calling him a coward) that fueled Macbeth to finally commit the horrid deed?

Malcolm / Malcolm - eldest son of Duncan, King of Scotland, and, Donalbain / Donalbain - younger son of Duncan.

Macduff / Macduff - Scottish nobleman of wisdom and integrity who becomes Macbeth's enemy.

How are the witches prophecies fulfilled?

They predict that Macbeth will be King of Scotland, and Banquo, though never king himself, will beget rulers. The witches leave and Ross informs Macbeth that he has inherited the title Thane of Cawdor (as also predicted by the witches). Macbeth contemplates the prediction of him being king, and wonders if he should help make it happen.
Weird is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word wyrd, meaning fate
