'Technology' refers to the equipment and processes used to enhance, maintain and modify the environment and resources in order to support human endeavour. It involves the application of knowledge, skills, equipment, materials, energy and data to create useful products. Technology is taught at all year levels.

FOOD AND TECHNOLOGY

YEAR 7

The basics:
Safety, & Hygiene, Nutrition, Healthy Food Pyramid. Pracs: Hedgehog, Scones, Pizza, Chow Mein, Stir fry vegetables & Noodles, Apple Crumble, Anzacs, Quiche and Macaroons.

YEAR 8
Raising Agents:
sponge (Air), pikelets (Steam), cake (Chemical), focaccia (Biological)

Protein Foods & Cooking Methods:
Meat (kebabs), Chicken (stir fry), Fish (shallow fried with chips), Vegetarian protein (nachos and vegetarian sauce over pasta)

Consumerism:
Labeling, Advertising, Convenience foods, Taste testing, Packaging & Recycling
YEAR 9

Adolescent Health:
Fast Foods, Lifestyle diseases, Body Mass Index.

Multicultural Foods:
Research a chosen country and the influence on Australia. Each week class cooks a two course meal from their chosen country.

YEAR 10
Catering:
Study and present a five course meal over five weeks: Hors d'oeuvres, entrée, main, dessert, after dinner chocolates. Groups of four plan a class meal with a theme eg child's party, BBQ, etc. Each week the class prepares and presents the meal. Design and present a restaurant menu.

Units 1&2

Unit 1:
Investigate, Prepare, Taste, and Write a report on a range of foods from the Healthy Food Pyramid - Cereals, Eggs, Sugar, Fats, Fruits, etc.

Unit 2:
Food preparation and Processing - food preservation, social & cultural factors, economic and religious beliefs, basic nutritional requirements, environmental conditions, etc. Evaluate developments in technology.

Unit 3:
Food Product Development and Marketing - study the development of new and modified food products

Unit 4:
Food Production and Processing. Food Production and Controls

 

SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY

YEAR 8
Knowledge and skills to operate a variety of equipment and resources safely. Implement a design proposal.
YEAR 9
Study of hydraulics, levers, gears and pulleys, pneumatics, and electromagnets
YEAR 10
Substations - (combustion engine systems), gearing systems, closed loop systems (controlling temperature), and gear ratios.

 

TEXTILES

YEAR 8
Introduction to fibres and fabrics, sewing machine licence.Tie dyeing, sewing and fabric embellishment.
YEAR 9
Use of commercial patterns. Fabric embellishment - screen printing, sachiko (Japanese thread work), machine Applique / Embroidery. Produce 2 items which can be decorative / functional.

 

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

Rationale:
Materials & Technology involves the purposeful application of knowledge, skill and equipment to create useful products from wood and metal. Students develop projects from an initial 'design brief'. From this students
investigate, design, produce and evaluate a product.

FURNITURE DESIGN:
Factors affecting production design and technological innovation, including function, aesthetics, and social, environmental and economics factors. Design and produce a storage unit.

JEWELLERY AND FINE METALS:
Study casting, shaping, soldering, chains and rings. Investigate, Design and Produce jewellery using found objects - copper, brass, silver.
